Second Crocheting Project, Pink Granny Square Blanket

This is my second crocheting blanket project. It started when a colour I need for my first project was out of stock and I couldn’t continue. I bet this is how many second projects get started.

The colour scheme for this came about when I went to buy the light pink (Bonus DK Ice Pink) and came home with a different shade of pink (Bonus DK Pink). Hence, I ended up with three shades of pink (Cupid, Ice Pink, Pink).

The centre flower pattern, is the centre of the Daisy Face Cloth from a book called Crochet Unravelled by Claire Bojczuk and the solid granny squares pattern is from Little Tin Bird.

Tell you the truth, I don’t know if this Pink Granny Square Blanket is finished or not. Currently, it measures 60cm by 60cm. Do I leave it as it is? Or shall I add more to it? If you read this and have any ideas, do let me know.

First Project Completed

Blanket

There is plenty of pink in my girls bedroom. Therefore, for my first crocheting project, for colour inspiration, I didn’t need to look too far. Having picked these 3 colours (purple, dark pink and light pink), my plan was to stick to multiples of 3 and make a blanket 9 squares across by 12 squares. This is what I calculated I would need to make such a blanket.

9 squares by 12 squares = 108 square

36 squares using purple + 36 dark pink + 36 light pink = 108 squares

However, when I came to joining the squares together, I soon realised that a 9 by 12 square blanket would be huge. And decided 6 by 9 squares would be a good size for my girls.

I’ve used Sidar (Hayfield) Bonus DK yarn: purple, cupid, ice pink for the centres, white and then joined together with oatmeal and a small double crochet border around the edge.  And used a 5.00mm crocheting hook. Being a complete beginner and done for pure pleasure, I haven’t tracked how much yarn I’ve used.

If you call over to Attic24, you’ll see her Summer Garden Granny Square, which is the pattern for my squares. I’ve just used one colour for the centre flower.

The final blanket is 6 squares by 9 squares or 77cm by 114cm

******************

Having initially calculated I’d need 108 square and then doubled up to 216 squares required, because I have two small girls who would each want a blanket, then downsizing the dimensions of the blanket, I’ve so far made 3 blankets from all the squares and have enough squares to make another.

A lot of hard work, but loads of fun.

Granny Square Mad

I’ll forgive you for thinking, that I’ve gone granny square mad. It’s just that, the colour I need to finish my girls granny square blanket, is out of stock. So, I’ve started a new mini project.

I’m going to join together with a lighter pink and put a square border around. I’m sure this “mini” project will grow and get bigger. Especially as both of my girls will want one. It gives me chance to practice new variations on the granny square and hone my skills.

It’s amazing how this hobby grips you (or it has me). If crocheting a particular square starts to feel monotonous, and to make a large blanket might require 100 or more square, then changing colour is like a breath of fresh air. And I love tidying up all those loose ends. It’s so satisfying.

I’ve already got some ideas on crocheting daisy and sunflower granny squares to make a blanket.

Granny Square Blanket, First Project

After making a couple of crochet items and having a little play. I decided that I needed a project to try out this new hobby and set of skills. I didn’t need to look far. I have two small girls and they love pink. I was sure that they would love a blanket made up of granny squares. The yarn I have used is from Hobbycraft, Sidar (Hayfield) Bonus DK. Since this was my first ever project, I hadn’t felt confident on splashing out on anything expensive. Hobbycraft have 3 for 2 offer on at the moment (March 2013).

I took my inspiration for what colours to use from the girls bedroom.

Easy really, pinks, purple and white.

This is what I came up with.

To join the square I used an oatmeal colour. Unfortunately, this colour is out of stock at Hobbycraft and the project has come to a stop. Once finished I’ll post more details on how many squares, dimensions, the colours, pattern and how long it has taken. Here it is so far…

I am very chuffed with it. However, with two small girls, I do need to make TWO blankets.

Crocheting, A New Hobby

I’ve got a new hobby, crochet. It started, well the thought started, at the end of last year. I was in Hobbycraft; admiring the yarns and I remembered as a child, that my nan use to crochet. I remember her crocheting those toilet roll covers. You know the ones I mean..

Then just after New Year, I saw an advert for a magazine about learning to knit and crochet. I though, no need to subscribe to a magazine to learn how to crochet. I did use to do a little bit of crocheting as a youngster (well had held a hook and yarn) and I’m sure with a bit of reading and watching youtube tutorials, it wouldn’t take much to get me started. So, after a little reading about what I needed and some basics, it wasn’t long before I made these.

Then it wasn’t long before I started accumulating all sorts of equipment.

The Gallery: It’s Beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Since I haven’t my tree up yet, these pictures are what I have to offer. I took them last week while out at a local National Trust property and it started to snow while I was there. It all looked like a scene from a Christmas card and felt very magical.

The Gallery: Colour

Colour

When you have smalls, every room in your home will ultimately have something of theirs in it. They bring so much colour to the home.

I have girls. Their room is pink. Their clothes are pink. I joke that my washing consists of whites, lights, colours, darks and pinks. Pink is their colour.

Some years ago I had my colours done by Colour Me Beautiful and I’m warm and soft. Basically, I suit many autumnal colours. Which is good, autumn is my favourite season and I love all those colours. Autumn is definitely my colour.

Hello guys, how do you do it?

I just don’t know how many of you, manage to post on a daily basis? I see that I haven’t contributed anything to my blog since 7th November and tomorrow is the first of December. I’ve never been able to keep a personal diary going beyond a few weeks. I feel a little bad, but I can live with it *smiley face*

Since the end of October, there’s been half term, during which smallest was a little under the weather for the whole week. She was poorly with her tonsils and ears. November is a busy month for birthdays. It was my nieces first birthday, the following day was my eldest and she was seven. And I baked and decorated her a cake. Then two days after that, it was mine. The Mister bought me an Ollo-clip. It’s a lens that fits onto my iPhone camera and I’ve been having a play with that. It’s fantastic and I highly recommend one if you are into photography and have an iPhone 4/ 4s. Now, I’m cracking on with the Christmas shopping and preparations.

It seems every time I try to compose this post in my head or start typing, something or someone else in my house needs me.

I just wanted to say, I am still here. If I follow-up, it’s because you write amazing posts or take photographs that I’m always interested in viewing. Currently, I’m hitting a bit of a busy period in the year and don’t want to write stuff, just for the sake of it. I hope you all understand and stay with me, those who are lovely enough to follow

I also have had a hospital appointment. In brief, the news was good and there doesn’t seem to be anymore thyroid cancer in me and I go back again in 6 months time to the hospital. Hopefully, I’ll get round to writing more about that soon (I hope).

The Gallery: Autumn

Autumn

Well this was an easy one for me. Since smallest has started full-time school, I’ve had more time to myself during the day. The past few weeks I have been out more during the day, walking the dog and going out with the camera. Autumn is my favourite season. I love the crispness in the air and the colours. I had a fantastic walk the other week and took these….
